Making a documentary of the ultramarathon Hadrian’s Wall Rat Race

I followed 2 friends run their first ultramarathon, the Hadrian’s Wall Rat Race, to raise awareness of their story and help achieve their charity donation goals.

Brief

Wez was running his first ultramarathon to raise money for 4louis, a charity close to his heart. I helped Wez tell the story of his ultramarathon whilst raising awareness about the charity and donations.

Approach

Initial call: We had an initial chat to align on goals and discuss what kind of story he wanted to tell.

Proposal: I outlined a plan to create a short 10 to 15 minute documentary to be launched on YouTube, as well as a social media trailer reel, capturing footage of a pre-run interview, following the race from start to finish, and a post-run vox-pox style shorter interview at the finish line.

Shooting: I arrived to Wez’s AirBnB in Carlisle the day before the race. Due to limited time, we captured the pre-run interview and training B-roll that day. I then captured footage and photos across the 20+ hour run from 5am to 4am the next day. I followed Wez and George in my van, scouting out good places to film them at, tracking them on my phone to find them, and returning to my van to drive to the next stop, squeezing in some cheese on toast and a nap where I could, and grabbing a knee brace for Wez!

Outcome

The documentary, which was called “Nobody is Coming to Save You”, and the instagram trailer reel, were both watched by 1000+ people.

The video content helped Wez raise double his charity donation target.
